There are many things you can do to get to know each other better or even improve your relationship with your partner, friends or family. And although big gestures can carry a lot of weight, you’ll often find that happy relationships aren’t all about the grand gestures — they’re also about the day-to-day things we say, ask or do for our partners, friends and family.
Whether you’re actively working on deepening your relationship with a partner or simply want to show a friend that you’re there for them, you’ll find that the following questions can help you improve the relationships that are important to you.
These questions allow you to create more moments in which you can get to know each other better.
So, without further ado, here are 6 questions to help you deepen your relationships:
- When you’re feeling ______, how can I show up for you?
Whether your partner, friend or family member is feeling down, stressed or super happy, knowing and understanding how you can be there for them in times of joy and sadness is a powerful way of showing how much you care. - What do you look forward to the most at the end of your workday?
You’ve probably been in a similar situation where you’ve finally reached the end of a busy day or week and just wish someone you love could read your mind and offer you what you want.
By asking and knowing beforehand what it is that they are looking forward to, you have the opportunity to make the other person feel more appreciated and cared for without them even having to say much or anything at all! In this way, you can surprise them from time to time and you feel like it’s the right thing to do.
- When do you feel most loved?
Being able to show someone you love and appreciate them in the way they will best understand is a great way to deepen your relationship with another person – whether they’re your friend, partner or family member.
- Do you have a favourite childhood memory?
Fun or simple questions, like this one, allow you a glimpse into another’s life, including the moments or things they’ve treasured and valued, and probably still do. Exchanging your favourite stories from the past – no matter how distant or recent – is a fun bonding experience, especially when the stories involve both of you.
- How do you envision your life being 10 years from now?
Talking about the future together – especially with your intimate partner – helps you deepen your relationship and allows both of you to peek into a potential future, as well as each other’s hopes and dreams. - Tell me more
This isn’t quite a question, but you can easily phrase it as one. Short, yet powerful, these three words show your interest in what the other person is doing or feeling. You can use this in many situations where your partner, friends or family have a story or experience to share with you.
Whether you choose to ask these questions or not, deepening your relationship with another person should feel like the natural thing to do. Questions like these can help the other person feel validated and create a safe space in which both of you can express yourselves freely.
